Think you know TREES?

We're planting more than you think. Trees for the Future (TREES) is partnering with farmers across Africa to restore degraded land and unlock prosperity through regenerative farming.

How we work

Farmer-led, science-backed

The people closest to the land are essential to restoring it. That's why Trees for the Future (TREES) is farmer-led. Farmers across Africa understand the realities of climate change and the impact it has on their land, families, and communities. TREES brings regenerative farming expertise and decades of learning. Together, we restore degraded land and design farms abundant in food, income, resilience, and pride.

The method

Restoring land with regenerative farming

When we say “regenerative farming,” we’re talking about an approach that uses diverse trees and plants to restore the health of soil, biodiversity, and ecosystems over time. The method also captures carbon and improves harvests. While every farmer custom-designs their farm, most look something like this.

Timber Lot

Fast-growing trees planted for fuel, building poles and a future cash harvest.

Fruit Trees

Mango, papaya and citrus add nutrition at home and fruit to sell at market.

Composting

Crop waste and manure become rich compost that rebuilds tired soil.

Pest Management

Companion planting and natural barriers keep pests down without chemicals.

Farmer Nursery

Seedlings are raised on-site, so every farm has trees ready to plant.

Permagardens

Raised, mulched permagarden beds grow nutrient-dense vegetables close to home.

Living Fence

Dense hedgerows shelter crops, mark boundaries and feed livestock.

The reality

The future is eroding.

A hillside of dry, eroded farmland

Regenerative farming can stop it.

For decades, trees were cleared for fields filled with single crops. What the world now knows is that monoculture depletes the soil, depleted soil erodes, food becomes harder to grow, and the next generation flees the farm.

600 million acres of degraded farmland stretch across Africa today, but regenerative farming can help us all reverse course.
